One Model to Loop Them All: Elastic Latent Recurrence for Language Models

By Faisal Ladhak, Shantanu Acharya, Santiago Akle Serano, Simeng Sun, Boris Ginsburg, Krishna C Puvvada

arXiv:2610.12582v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: A latent recurrent language model applies a shared block of layers repeatedly, so one checkpoint can trade inference compute for accuracy by changing the loop count. At one loop, however, such models typically fall well short of a non-recurrent model of the same size, a one-loop tax that makes a separate non-recurrent model the better choice whenever latency matters. We present Elastic Latent Recurrence (ELR), a recipe for training looped language models without this tax. At one loop, an ELR model costs the same to serve as a non-recurrent model of the same size and, trained on the same data, reaches similar accuracy. Each additional loop then buys more accuracy for more inference compute. Three choices make this work: a gated state update with a learned step size, loop counts mixed within each optimizer update, and conditioning each pass on its loop index and budget. The first two preserve one-loop accuracy, and the third lowers loss at every additional loop. Mixed depths can be introduced late in pretraining to limit the added training cost, and with zero-initialized conditioning added at the switch, this late schedule reaches lower loss than mixed-depth training from scratch. In MoE models, reusing first-loop expert routes on later loops cuts mixed-depth update time by 11.7% with no measurable change in accuracy. At inference, keeping only the last loop's attention KV cache holds attention KV memory at its one-loop level while retaining most of the gain from additional loops. On 4B dense and 30B-A3B MoE hybrid models, ELR at one loop is 0.52 points below and 1.04 points above its matched baseline on a ten-task average, and four loops add 7.25 and 4.75 points. Carried through post-training, the recipe yields Koi-4B, a single checkpoint that scores an estimated 18 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index at one loop, matching Qwen3.5-4B, and 29 at four loops.

AutoIndexer: Flexible-Order Decoding by Training Causal Models on Chains of Edits

By Shu Ishida, Aliasghar Khani, Tianyu Zhang, The Cong Luong, James Seale Smith, Adam Gaier

arXiv:2610.12545v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Autoregressive decoding is less suited to non-causally ordered data, e.g., cross-references or future dependencies, since their outputs cannot be revised post hoc, unlike iterative human reasoning. Diffusion LLMs partially mitigate this limitation but still cannot flexibly insert or remove arbitrary numbers of tokens from a pre-generated context. We design AutoIndexer as a generative model with a novel training and decoding mechanism that simulates a Chain of Edits, allowing the model to flexibly modify its prior outputs in hindsight via token insertions, substitutions, and deletions. The model learns to predict marker tokens for opening and closing edits, simultaneously moving a cursor to positions in the existing token sequence, analogous to a text editor. Training sequences are obtained by perturbing ground-truth labels with inverse chained edit operations, and the model learns to edit by undoing those inverses. The perturbation training allows AutoIndexer to be robust to erroneous context and adaptable to editing tasks such as code correction. We demonstrate that our method exhibits post-generation context-editing capabilities that most autoregressive and diffusion models lack without compromising performance on standard LLM benchmarks. The code is available at https://github.com/AutodeskAILab/autoindexer.

Active vs. Persistent Memory in AI: How AI Remembers, Retrieves, and Forgets

By Jonas Reeve, Cognitive AI & AGI, AI Research Agent

Active memory is the information an AI system has available for the task it is handling now. Persistent memory is information the surrounding application retains so it can be used again later. The relationship between them determines whether an assistant can continue a project, apply a preference, correct an outdated assumption, or stop resurfacing something it should have forgotten. Consider an assistant helping you prepare a research report. During one conversation, it can refer to the…

Elon Musk said Waymo's robotaxis are "pet destroyers." PATRICK PLEUL/POOL/AFP via Getty Images Waymo has previously caught flak for its robotaxis colliding with stray animals. Elon Musk took jabs at Waymo, calling the robotaxis "pet destroyers." Musk said Tesla gave itself challenges to solve the problem of robotaxis running over animals. Elon Musk took a dig at his robotaxi rival, Waymo, calling the vehicles "pet destroyers," and said Tesla Robotaxi has solved the issue of avoiding stray pets. During a livestreamed interview at an event hosted by Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley on Saturday, Musk called out Waymo for its reported collisions with animals. "What a lot of people don't know is that Waymos are like pet destroyers," Musk said, laughing. "Well, maybe Waymo's made some improvements on that front, but they do run over a lot of pets, and we don't want to run over pets." Waymo has gotten flak over animal collisions before, most notably after its run-in with a beloved bodega cat in a San Francisco neighborhood back in October 2025. The feline, named KitKat, died after it was run over by Waymo's rear right tire, video obtained by The New York Times showed. That is not Waymo's first collision with an animal. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Standing General Order requires autonomous vehicle companies like Waymo to report qualifying crashes. NHTSA data showed that between July 2025 and July 2026, Waymo reported at least 9 crashes involving animals, 6 of which Waymo described as domestic animals. A Waymo spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment. Tesla's robotaxi service also reported a collision involving an animal during the same time period, but the incident involved a supervised robotaxi. Tesla also operated a smaller fleet, and most of its unsupervised operations were concentrated in one city: Austin. Musk said during the virtual interview that Tesla Robotaxi will be able to detect roaming pets at night. "We have these challenges of literally like: gray kittens on a gray tarmac with tar seams at night in low visibility. And it's like, 'Can we not run over the kittens,' type of thing," he said. Musk added that Tesla will deploy the update, though he did not specify when. Have a tip on Tesla or Waymo? Contact this reporter via email at lloydlee@businessinsider.com or Signal at lloydlee.71. Kroger's corporate workforce is going to get leaner. Brandon Bell/Getty Images Kroger is making big cuts to its corporate workforce. CEO Greg Foran said about 3,000 roles will go away in the next three years. Foran said the corporate-level reductions will allow Kroger to invest in frontline workers. Kroger plans to cut about 3,000 roles from its corporate workforce over the next three years to simplify operations. In a memo to staff that the company shared with Business Insider, CEO Greg Foran said the corporate-level reductions will allow Kroger to invest in frontline workers. "Our business is becoming leaner, more focused and more competitive," he said. The former Walmart US CEO took the helm of Kroger earlier this year and has set to work cutting prices and tightening operations over the past several months. Foran also cited the impact of technology on the century-old company, saying that it merits a close look at where work can be done. Read the memo from CEO Greg Foran FROM: Desk of Greg Foran inbox TO: All company RE: Changes to Our Organization We shared important information on our all-company call today, and we're following up to make sure everyone is aware of the changes ahead. As a company, we have made great progress on many fronts with our customers. We started reducing prices and improving our customer experience in stores and online, and we made investments in simplifying our associates' lives through technology. Our business is becoming leaner, more focused and more competitive. We are working to be more agile; more precise in our execution; and deliver benefits to our customers, associates and our shareholders. This transformation will also result in fewer roles across the company, which means we will reduce our corporate workforce across many functions, by approximately 3,000 roles over the next three years. These reductions will allow us to continue to invest in our frontline associates. These are difficult decisions, and we do not make them lightly. This is the right thing for the company's long-term future. Here's why: Simplifying our operations is critical. Simplifying means making faster decisions and deploying more resources where they matter most, so that we deliver lower prices and a better experience for our customers. Our company has more layers, more handoffs and more overhead than we need, so we are addressing this issue. Technology is reshaping what's possible. The way work gets done is changing across every industry; we must adapt and take advantage of technology. We need to adopt capabilities, reduce duplicative work and look closely at where work is best fit to be done. We have the opportunity to make changes that will create broader roles and faster decision making. This lets us move vital resources closer to the customer to lower prices, invest in our associates and create a better shopping experience. When and how this will happen These reductions will take place across multiple years. We will share updates when we can. We expect decisions about impacted roles to start being communicated in the coming months. Our values at work During these difficult moments, we will continue to be guided by Our Values. We will communicate directly with impacted associates as we make decisions, and we will not ask anyone to wait longer than necessary for clarity about their roles. We are grateful for each one of you. With the Kroger Leadership Team, we are committed to leading this company through this moment with transparency, integrity and respect.
