Tesla's Roadster reservation holders could have made a lot more if they had chosen an investment vehicle over an electric vehicle. Tesla Tesla first unveiled plans to reboot the high-powered Roadster in 2017. Reservations cost $50,000. The company stock has skyrocketed since the announcement as the Roadster languished in limbo for nearly 9 years. We did some back-of-the-napkin math to find out how much that $50,000 could have yielded if invested in Tesla stock instead. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is about to pull the wraps off the second-generation Roadster — again. It's been nine years since Elon Musk said it would revive the Roadster. Would-be buyers chomped at the bit to grab the two-door, 600-mile-range, high-powered electric car way back in November 2017. They paid either $50,000 to reserve a spot in the car's queue or $250,000 to buy a Founders Series upfront. Roughly nine years later, the car still hasn't entered production. That could change soon, as Tesla is about to unveil the car — now apparently with cold-gas thrusters that might allow it to temporarily hover — on Thursday night. That raised an expensive question: What if early Roadster buyers had put that money into Tesla stock instead? So we did some back-of-the-napkin math to figure it out. Tesla shares closed at about $21 on November 17, 2017, the first trading day after Musk unveiled the car. At roughly $360 in mid-October 2026, a $50,000 investment made in 2017 would now be worth between $850,000 and $900,000. That's a gain of more than $800,000, before taxes and trading fees. A buyer who put down the full $250,000 for a limited Founders Series Roadster would be sitting on roughly $4.3 million in Tesla stock today, a gain of about $4 million. The long wait for the Roadster's deliveries has not gone unnoticed by Musk. During an October 2025 earnings call, he thanked the vehicle's "long-suffering" deposit holders, while saying the car company had focused heavily on its autonomy and robotics ambitions. The wait has been too much for some big-name shoppers. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (who has a famously fraught relationship with Musk) publicly canceled his reservation in 2025. YouTuber Marques Brownlee, known as MKBHD, canceled one of his two reservations after 8 years, saying that Tesla "has been sitting with my 50 grand for eight years and hasn't done anything with it." Per Musk's X thread, the wait might be worth it. Ahead of the Thursday event, Tesla's CEO wrote that the reveal will be "a candidate for greatest product demo of all time." Verb CEO Cyrus Beschloss says AI's critics are having a hard time not using it. Michael M. Santiago/Getty Images Verb CEO Cyrus Beschloss says AI's critics are still using the technology. He said they will have a hard time deciding between data centers and ChatGPT. Most Americans don't want large data centers in their communities, even if they use AI. Verb CEO Cyrus Beschloss is calling AI non-believers' bluff. Beschloss said critics of AI and the data centers that power it aren't above using the technology. "All the people that are saying they're anti-data center, that they're anti-AI in general, they're using it," Beschloss said on Wednesday during CNBC's Trading the Midterms event. He said that when people have to choose between shutting down data centers or shutting down ChatGPT, it won't be an easy decision. "There's going to be a heck of a crossroads," Beschloss said. His company, Verb, is a data exchange where users can get paid by selling their proprietary information to data-hungry AI companies. Users can decide which data to share, set their reserve price, and buyers can decide whether to purchase it. Verb says its data shows that among people who use AI assistants, the majority of the queries dealt with schoolwork, writing, business, and side hustles. OpenAI transformed society in 2022 when it released its chatbot, ChatGPT. Tech companies have raced to dominate the market ever since. Meta, Google, and other major players have invested heavily in developing AI, which they say will revolutionize everything from health to work. Critics of AI, however, say the benefits don't outweigh the risks. They're concerned about the potential for AI to displace human jobs, destroy the environment, co-opt copyrighted material, and even destroy humanity as we know it. Data centers, which tech companies need to power their AI systems, are a glaring physical manifestation of those concerns. Supporters say building more data centers will create new jobs, bolster economies, and strengthen the country's national security. Others say they will strain electrical grids, raise utility prices, damage the environment, and disrupt daily life. A Gallup survey published in May said 7 of 10 surveyed Americans oppose building a data center near their homes. President Donald Trump's administration has broadly supported AI development and the expansion of the nation's infrastructure, including the $500 billion Stargate Project, an initiative backed by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. The initiative was launched in 2025 to build new AI infrastructure. Read the original article on Business Insider

Techies on X keep joking about spies seducing engineers. Richard Drury/Getty Images The newest subject of the tech industry's memes: seductive spies seeking AI secrets. WSJ reported that OpenAI warned employees a hypothetical stranger at the playground could have ulterior motives. X users memed hypothetical HR guidance and jumped on the opportunity to roast tech bros' dating skills. Are you a complex cyber-spy, or are you just happy to see me? Employees at AI labs are working on bleeding-edge tech and privy to trade secrets — so it's understandable if they're on high alert for traps, honeypots, and secret agents. Especially after the FBI arrested OpenAI employee Abdulrahman Alfozan and charged him with bugging one of the lab's conference rooms. Alfozan, who was fired, has yet to enter a plea. The Wall Street Journal published a story on Wednesday about the security instructions AI labs were giving their employees. Reporter Erin Woo wrote on X: "OPENAI to EMPLOYEES: If someone is trying to seduce you, first consider — could they be a spy???" The story sparked a wave of memes. One X user joked that OpenAI's HR should tell employees: "Remember how ugly and unfunny you are." Another joked that most AI employees are 2s to 5s on the classic scale to 10, and that they should be doubtful if a 9 is interested. every date is now a red-team exercise https://t.co/4xZRzUsNG3 — marwan (@_marwanad) October 15, 2026 Katie Miller jumped in to say that 10s are definitely spies. "And in SF, if she's a 6, she's a spy," Miller wrote. "This is now my favorite 2026 burn," wrote Ashley Mayer, the cofounder of the venture capital firm Coalition. Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer, pointed out that the Superintelligence Labs' office was in the South Bay. "So if someone you don't know is trying to talk to you, you KNOW something is up," he wrote. Some took a darker spin on the meme. A Hugging Face alum wrote that OpenAI engineers would never be truly loved. "You will be loved for your access," he wrote. Others were hesitant to accept the cloak-and-dagger narrative. One X user wrote that suitors would be more likely to look for money than secret intel. looking for an openai employee to seduce asap https://t.co/oL54hX7kC6 — adel 🌟 (@adelwu_) October 15, 2026 Another group took it as a positive — the employees are getting approached, even if it's a spy. One X user said that it was "best recruiting strategy I have ever seen." Another said they were annoyed they never got honeypotted in their own tech job. When it comes to romance, it can be rough out there for techies. San Francisco is a notoriously difficult dating scene; tech bros told Business Insider that the city's gender ratio and relentless hustle culture pushed romance off the table. Maybe you've heard tech's calling card: "Single until Series B." Either way, the advice would likely be tough to hear. "HR tearing self-esteem apart one employee at a time," one user wrote. Take a look at how he makes and spends his money. Tyler Perry's entertainment empire made him a billionaire. The actor, director, writer, and producer joined the billionaire ranks of Oprah Winfrey, George Lucas, John de Mol, and Steven Spielberg in 2020. In 2022, Perry was the third highest-paid entertainer in the world at $175 million, Forbes reported. As of October 2026, his net worth is $1.4 billion, according to his Forbes profile. Perry's income streams include his film and TV library, investments, his ongoing content deal with BET, and Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. Here's a look at how he makes and spends his fortune. Perry, 57, was born Emmitt Perry, Jr. in 1969 and raised in New Orleans. Tyler Perry with his mother. Since parting ways with Lionsgate, Perry has inked partnerships with the Oprah Winfrey Network and Viacom, the parent company of BET. Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey. JB Lacroix/WireImage/Getty Images Perry created shows such as "The Have and Have Nots" and "If Loving You Is Wrong" for OWN during his seven-year partnership with the network, which ended in 2019. In 2017, Perry signed a contract with BET's parent company, Viacom (now Paramount Skydance Corporation), to produce exclusive original content for BET and other Viacom networks following his partnership with OWN. BET, short for Black Entertainment Television, was launched in 1980 to focus on programming for Black audiences. In a September 2020 profile, Forbes estimated that about $60 million of Perry's billion-dollar net worth came from his stake in BET+. So it gave us breathing room to try to figure out what we are going to do," Meghan told Oprah Winfrey in a 2021 tell-all interview. Perry revealed in the Netflix docuseries "Harry and Meghan" that he had written Meghan a letter ahead of her wedding, saying he was praying for her. When Meghan later called him, crying, Perry validated her feelings about how she was being treated by the media. "To tell Meghan that I felt her feelings were valid hurt," he said in the docuseries. "I didn't want to have to say that to her — I didn't want her to feel that. But I didn't want to lie to her. She was afraid of them destroying her, or going crazy, or them making her think she was crazy." Business Insider's reporter explored a 1900s resort town in the Great Smoky Mountains, full of historic cabins abandoned by the end of the century. Joey Hadden/Business Insider The last thing I expected to find in Great Smoky Mountains National Park was a resort town. It was abandoned in the late 1900s, but its 100-year-old cabins still stand. I stepped inside the empty vacation homes and found eerie remnants of a past era. Tucked away beneath the towering oaks and pines in the lush woods of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 100-year-old cabins dot a once-abandoned resort town known as Elkmont. I visited in the spring of 2023 and was amazed to find that the cabins preserved and restored by the National Park Service were open for public viewing.  When I made plans to visit the historic district, I pictured myself wandering outside cabins and looking in the windows. I had no idea I'd be able to step inside them for a more intimate look at what life was like 100 years ago. Elkmont Historic District is in a valley on the northern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Elkmont Historic District is just south of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Google Maps I took a taxi to the resort town. Drivers can take the US-411 from Gatlinburg and turn at the "Elkmont Campground" sign, according to Visit My Smokies, a tourism site run by Sevier County. From there, take a left at the sign that says "Elkmont Nature Trail."  I began my trip to Elkmont by reading about its history. Information about the history at Elkmont Historic District. Joey Hadden/Business Insider According to the site's historical markers provided by the NPS, the land was used for farming in the 1800s. Then, in the 20th century, a railroad was built, bringing loggers and tourists to the area. This led to the establishment of a resort town known as Daisy Town. About 100 years ago, it was a place where wealthy Tennesseans escaped hot summers in cities and found "harmony with nature," according to the NPS. Joey Hadden/Business Insider Families took the train to Daisy Town and spent their summers relaxing on the porches of their vacation homes and playing outdoors, one NPS marker said. When the National Park Service bought the land in 1934, the resort town diminished. Joey Hadden/Business Insider Residents had the option of selling their cabins for full price or at half price with a lifetime lease, according to Visit My Smokies. By the late 20th century, the once-booming vacation community was a ghost town. Abandoned vacation home in the Elkmont historical district of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. ehrlif/Getty Images In 1992, the NPS stopped renewing leases, and the abandoned cabins began to deteriorate. In 2009, the NPS announced plans to preserve Elkmont's historic buildings. An image of the NPS information plates showing cabins before and after renovations Joey Hadden/Business Insider Volunteers removed trees, repaired roofs and ceilings, and added insulation to the cabins, Knox News reported. During my visit, I went inside every cabin. Joey Hadden/Business Insider I stepped inside all 16 cabins lining the pedestrian street. The oldest of the bunch was built in 1830 and then moved in 1932 to serve as a guest house in the resort community, according to the NPS. Joey Hadden/Business Insider The one-story building stood out to me because it looked older than the rest, with a distressed, unpainted wooden facade. Inside was a single, large room with nothing but a stone fireplace. Joey Hadden/Business Insider I thought the weathered, empty home felt eerie.  In fact, none of the cabins were furnished. Joey Hadden/Business Insider Still, I thought details like built-in kitchen counters and cabinets gave them a sense of a past life. Looking out the windows of these historic cabins, I thought about what it would have been like to vacation here a century ago. Joey Hadden/Business Insider I pictured a shaded summer, waking up to natural views, and stepping outside to enjoy a cup of coffee with no agenda. It seemed like an ideal getaway for city dwellers like me. On my way out of Elkmont, I spotted families wandering the street. This made me think that the site is no longer the ghost town it once was. Joey Hadden/Business Insider I left Elkmont with a sense of what the once-abandoned resort community was like and felt grateful to the preservation crew for making it possible for me to visit. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Nottingham, England, in October 2026. Darren Staples / AFP via Getty Images Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their first joint appearance since moving back to the UK. They visited Nottingham, where they attended their first royal engagement as a couple in 2017. Photos show how the two visits compare, including a subtle fashion nod from Meghan. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might not work for the monarchy, but their latest public appearance was certainly reminiscent of their royal heyday. On Thursday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made their first joint appearance since moving back to the UK with their children in September. The couple headed to Nottingham, which holds special significance for the duke and duchess. They made their debut as a royal couple there in December 2017 after they got engaged, attending the Terrence Higgins Trust World AIDS Day charity fair. For their 2026 visit, they spent the day visiting multiple charities, including the Himmah Hub, the organization Meghan collaborated with on her 2018 charity cookbook when she was a working royal. It's been nearly a decade since their royal debut, and although Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior royals, their 2026 appearance looked remarkably similar to their 2017 visit. Take a look at photos from both Nottingham appearances to see the similarities and differences. At their first royal engagement in December 2017, Harry and Meghan wore coordinating ensembles. Samir Hussein/Samir Hussein/WireImage/Getty Images For their first appearance after their engagement, Harry and Meghan both walked the streets of Nottingham in navy coats for a matching moment. Meghan's double-breasted coat from Mackage hit her mid-calf, and she paired it with a black turtleneck and a taupe Joseph skirt. Black, slouchy boots completed the look. Harry paired his coat with a blue blazer, dark trousers, a white shirt, and a cream scarf. For their 2026 visit, the couple showed off their own style, wearing slightly more casual attire. Meghan, on the other hand, wore an all-maroon ensemble designed by Joseph, who made her skirt for her 2017 appearance. As she did for her first event, Meghan wore a turtleneck and a skirt, with a belt at the waist, though she swapped boots for pointed-toe heels. She wore her coordinating coat open, showing off the look as she greeted people, and had her hair swept up in a ponytail. They greeted members of the public in 2017, but they kept their interactions fairly formal. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle greet well-wishers on a walkabout in December 2017 in Nottingham, England. They got married, welcomed two children, stepped back from the royal family, and spent years living in California. Despite those changes, the couple looked as smitten with each other as they did nine years ago, with photographers snapping a shot of them in a nearly identical pose to the one from 2017. They smiled and grasped each other's hands as Meghan held Harry's wrist, just as she had in the past. Read the original article on Business Insider
